Welcome back to our weekly blog update, yes we know it’s a holiday, but we still like to keep you up-to-date with college news and events.
It’s been another busy week full of activities and exhibitions, so let us commence.
Art Sculpture Exhibition
Art and Design: Development 2 (Supported Learning) will be showing their art sculptures that they have created throughout the year, in the student canteen in the Springburn campus from Tuesday 19th May until 5th June 2015.
The students created “bull head” sculptures out of bike parts donated by The Bike Station in Glasgow. The sculptures are influenced by Picasso.
Special thanks to the welding department at GKC who helped with the sculptures.
Everyone is welcome to come and view the work.
Thirteen students, from Springburn ESOL National 4A and ESOL for Work, visited the Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge on Monday the 18th of May.
Amongst other activities they rode a tram, went down a mine shaft and visited miners’ cottages. The visit really opened their eyes to life in Scotland from the 1880s.
A big thank you must also go to Isobel Martin who kindly volunteered to drive the minibus.
Modern Apprenticeship Week Event
On Monday the 18th of May the college hosted several businesses as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2015.
The event was attended by students from within the college and people from outside (referred on by DWP / Jobcentre Plus) looking for information on possible progression routes through apprenticeships, or routes to retraining in a different area.
The college is offering MA frameworks in Creative Industries (music , TV / radio production, jewellery) and Life Sciences (laboratory skills) and it was our first year being involved with the MA Week.
2km Fun Run
HND Sports Coaching and Development of Sports students at GKC had to plan, run and evaluate an event as part of their course. Throughout the 2 years of the students’ course they have coached a variety of age groups and gained plenty of experience in coaching so they decided to organise a Fun Run for children.
On Thursday the 21st of May young people from a variety of schools gathered to take part in the fun run, which was held in Springburn park.
Other activities such as Beat the Goalie, Relay Runs and an Obstacle Course were also on offer.
A great day was had by all, well done to the organisers.
On Thursday the 21st of May Wellhouse Housing Association along with Glasgow Kelvin College and other organisations held an Open Day at Wellhouse Allotments Society. Connect A-Llots, a name that GKC students came up with for the allotment site to advertise the open day.
The event was well attended and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, even though it was ‘fresh’ outside.
Activities included face painting, planting your own seeds and counting bugs.
What Are GKC Students Up To Next Week?
HND Photography Exhibition
The event will be held at SWG3, 100 Eastvale Place, G3 8QG from 7.00 pm till late.
Photographic work is from a range of genres and everyone welcome to attend, so try and pop along to support your fellow students.

ESOL students were asked to write a piece of work with the theme of “I belong to Glasgow”.
On Tuesday the 26th of May there will be a presentation of prizes and readings of some of the work. This will take place in the Springburn Campus, 3rd floor reception area from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm and also in the East End Campus, in the foyer, from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm.

Degree Show 2015
This will be open to the public from Monday the 1st until Friday the 12th of June 2015. It will be open Monday to Friday, from 9.00 am until 4.30 pm.
There will also be a Special Show on Saturday the 6th of June 2015, from 12.00 until 5.00 pm, this show is part of the West End Festival.
One of the pieces of art on display at the show has already been discussed by STV Glasgow, it will definitely be worth the trip to our West End Campus to see all the students work.
Web pages profiling the students have opened on our college website, under News and Events, but for now here are a few examples of what you could be seeing at the show.
We are finished for another week, don’t forget you are off on Monday too, so cases will start back on Tuesday the 26th.of May and we will be back here next Friday.
