Electrifying Sessions and Open Days!

A week of enrolments and we are getting closer to the students arriving and starting / continuing their courses.  It’s a busy time, but we are sure things will get even busier over the coming months.

Electric Honey Sessions

The tradition continued as the label showcased their latest crop of talent on a rain-soaked Friday night in Glasgow.

But the students of Glasgow Kelvin College are a versatile breed, and they proved that at this all-day event which was organised by the college’s events management and music business.

There was a large crowd most of the event with over 500 tickets sold in advance.  Radio  DJ Jim Gellatly was the host for the event and there was a positive reaction for all the bands who played. This is another example of how live projects enhance the learner experience.

The third year of these intimate open air gigs have again proven be a massive hit with Scots, set in the lush setting of Glasgow’s refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand.

Headliners Hector Bizerk were joined by Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, Be Charlotte, Sunshine Social and Mickey 9’s, with The Claramassa opening the show.

John Wheatley Learning Network announced finalist at Inspiring City Awards

The College’s John Wheatley Learning Network has been shortlisted for yet ANOTHER prestigious award in Scotland!  This time it’s for the Glasgow Inspiring City Awards, sponsored by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and The Herald.  The Award recognises innovative organisations whose work makes Glasgow a remarkable place to live, work and play.

In partnership with The Wheatley Group, the Learning Network nomination is in the Education category, sponsored by Glasgow Taxis, which contains a list of several other notable learning providers.  Chief among these is MCR Pathways, also a partner of the College, who have been shortlisted in three categories.

The John Wheatley Learning Network nomination is well-deserved recognition for the innovative and inclusive work which takes place to deliver technology and learning opportunities in some of Scotland’s most challenged communities.  Congratulations go to everyone at Glasgow Kelvin and at The Wheatley Group who has been involved in the network  –  being acknowledged in this way is a great achievement.

And winning….?  That would be the icing on the cake!

The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner at The Radisson in September.  Fingers crossed, everyone!

College Mentors

MentorsWe have students who are volunteering within the college called Peer Mentors. These ten students have been helping throughout enrolment by producing student cards, showing students the facilities and support staff services, working closely with teaching and support staff to make the enrolment process run more efficiently.

The Peer Mentors are on their way to attaining a Community Achievement Award for their work over enrolment.

Daily Life at GKC Album

We have started a Daily Life at GKC 2016/17 album on our Facebook page.  This is something we did last year and it proved to be quite popular.

Staff and students can submit pictures of events/activities/general going-ons on college life and we will tweet them and include them in our Daily Life at GKC Album, where they will be captioned and dated.

Here is a sample of what we have so far.

You can see the full album HERE.  If you have pictures you would like included in the album and/or Tweeted during the year email them, with caption, to tborland@glasgowkelvin.ac.uk

That’s us for another week, but don’t forget to check back next Friday and send us your news so we can include it here.
