Artistic and Photographic!

It’s the September weekend already and as we all stop for a few days much needed rest, we can read over the activities that took place over the past week.

As usual our staff and students have been hard at work.

Essential Experience

The level 5 Beauty students welcomed their first clients of the session in last week to both Springburn and Easterhouse campuses.

The students had a great experience working on the clients and received very positive feedback, which has helped boast their confidence immensely.

The salons are now open to the students, staff and the public, please contact the beauty department for further information

‘Mudder’ Success

Our intrepid team for this year’s ‘Pretty Muddy’ at Bellahouston Park have returned with no mortal injuries and a sponsor fund totaling £120.  They’re still delighted to accept donations to their Just Giving page for Cancer Research UK.

Kirsten Rice, Tracy Mackenzie, Susan Conway and her daughter, Emma, successfully and triumphantly completed the course and, three days later, they agree that the muscles that ache the most are their facial muscles as they laughed the whole way round.  A great way to raise money for a very worthy cause – so please keep giving generously!

Artistic Draw

nicola-carberryArt lecturer Nicola Carberry was at the Derwent Drawing Prize award ceremony at the Mall Galleries in London where she was shortlisted for a prize.

The opening was on Monday night and the selected works are currently on show at the Mall Galleries, London from the 19th to the 24th of September 2016. Admission Free. You can still vote for Nicola online for the public choice. http://www.derwent-artprize.com/basket-chair

A Snapping Time

A great time was had in Edinburgh, on Tuesday the 20th of September, with Easterhouse’s finest Level 6 Photography group. Springburn’s Level 6’s Photographers (just as fine) were also there.

Both groups got on really well. They saw some fantastic photographs at the Harry Benson exhibition down at the Parliament and some really interesting and challenging portraiture at The Taylor Wessing exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery.

Another Successful BBC Apprenticeship Programme!

bbcapps2016gradYet another group of hugely talented young people have just completed their Modern Apprenticeship with BBC Scotland in partnership with Glasgow Kelvin College and Skills Development Scotland, and progressed to a wide variety of exciting options in the film, TV and broadcasting industry!

This group has been the fourth of these very successful programmes which identify, cultivate and develop future talent.

The programme sees the apprentices spending two days per month at Glasgow Kelvin College learning many of the technical and vocational skills they might require, as well as personal development and core skills.  The remainder of their time is spent on work placement within the exciting film, media and TV production industry in Glasgow where students rotate their work experience through all the genres at BBC Scotland and other major creative media organisations.

This last year’s successful learners celebrated their achievements at a presentation event at BBC Scotland on Pacific Quay.  The apprenticeship programme has provided a springboard to careers in production and journalism, with some of the young students going onto degrees in higher education and others moving onto further work at BBC Scotland, BBC Alba or other media production organisations.
