What a great, even if it was a bit chilly, week.
As well as all the usual things our students get up to, we also had our Graduation Ceremonies for all our successful 2016 students. Lots to tell you about, plus pictures and videos.
Celebrating Success at Graduation 2016
A record number of delighted HNC, HND and Degree students yesterday evening celebrated their success at Glasgow Kelvin College’s Graduation 2016 events.
Spread over two ceremonies to accommodate the large number of achievers for 2015/16, the students, their families and friends, proud staff and guests filled Glasgow’s City Halls for the spectacular rite of passage.
The graduates were spurred on by words of encouragement from Rodger Harkins, Director of Coaching at Scottish Athletics, and Lorna Jack , the first woman to hold the office of Chief Executive of the Law Society of Scotland. Both speakers gave rousing and empowering speeches to the new graduates, sending them off to the next chapter of their learning lives.
The ceremony closed with an uplifting performance from the Glasgow Kelvin Student Choir.
See what our students had to say about the event.
“The graduation is one of my proudest moments and the best experience in my life. The team at Glasgow Kelvin College West supported me to believe I could do it!
Thank you to the Business Faculty and especially the dedicated tutors Susan, Lynne, Sharon, Lis ,John, Wilma, Christine and Simon.”
Sandra Paterson, HND Business Management
“I had a great time at Graduation, I will never forget the experience. As a mature student who had no former school qualifications, gaining a HND in Accounting was massive for me.
Thanks to all the support of lecturers from Glasgow Kelvin College, I am now studying towards an Honours degree at university. Although I will have another graduation in a couple of years time I thought I owed it to myself and the college to attend and show that I haven’t forgotten my roots!
Great afternoon. Thank You”
Helen McMillan, HND Accounting
“I graduated on Monday with an HND in Event Management.
I just wanted to say that myself and family had a fantastic day and I thought the event was very well organised.”
Debbie Scott, HND in Event Management

Level 4 EVIP Beauty & Level 4 Introduction to Service Industries from the Easterhouse campus along with Tracy Hunter, Lisa Wilson and EVIP Coach Maxine Connor, walked a 5k around Easterhouse on Friday the 18th of November. This was to raise funds for our Barnardo’s Christmas Gift Appeal.
So far they have raised over £200, this amount will rise when they begin their Christmas stall in December.
The fashion students are busy making their stock for their craft sale on the 6th, 7th and 8th December in the Springburn campus. This is a great opportunity for them all to work as a team and use their skills and creative flair to produce amazing Christmas decorations and accessories.
Our very popular range of scarfs is back in new designs for 2016 at only £5 each, perfect for Christmas presents.
Please support this enterprise, which raises money for our nominated charity, “Make Love Not Scars”.
World Hello Day – Ni Hao! from the Glasgow Chinese School
World Hello Day was on the 21st of November and The Glasgow Chinese School put out a message to say Happy Hello and welcome everyone.
The Glasgow Chinese School, the largest (and many would say the best) Chinese School in the UK is now working in partnership with the College’s Youth Access programme.

Secret Santa Fundraiser
Does anyone really need another candle, voucher or scarf from a colleague, friend or relative this Christmas? Why not donate your Secret Santa gift to a child in need this year?
Make a child’s Christmas by donating to the Barnados Christmas Toy Appeal.
Please (unwrapped) donations at reception areas by Friday the 9th of December. Suggestions for gifts: toy , pyjamas, socks, hats sweets. For the older kids gift vouchers for cinema, or a gift card that can be used in any store would be a good option. Any gift no matter how small will make a difference.
This is being driven by level 4 Beauty students as part of their Personal Development units and Enterprise.
Bad Girls – The Musical
HND Musical Theatre students are performing Bad Girls, the musical from January the 11th to January the 13th 2017 at the Platform.
Tickets will be £8 per adult, £5 per child and £4.50 for GKC students (with a valid student ID).
Dr Bike Events
Some more exciting Cycling Opportunities are being offered to both Staff and Students within the college.
The first one, on the 3rd of December, is a 25 mile group ride. Lunch is provided and a support van is on hand should you need it.
Next up is the FREE Bike Check to help get your cycle ready for winter. This is on the 6th of December, at the Springburn Campus and there are free mince pies.
Finally, the 16th of December, sees a night cycle. This helps build confidence and of course it’s a lot of fun.
If you are interested in any of these, then please contact UNI-Cycle through their Facebook page.
That’s us finished for another week, remember you can contribute to our blog anytime, just send details to firstname.lastname@example.org
