Partnerships, Receptions and Support!

Hope you all returned refreshed from your long weekend and managed to get back into studying quickly.

We have had lots happening this week, so we will get started.

More Partnership in the Community

A dynamic partnership between GKC and Rising Stars (Jobs & Business Glasgow) has created a trail-blazing new Childcare centre in Easterhouse – Blairtummock Childcare Centre of Excellence, where nursery and childcare provision will be provided alongside our delivery of Early Years & Childcare qualifications and skills.

The Centre was officially opened by Glasgow Council Leader, Cllr Susan Aitken on Tuesday – more info on our website News page.

Kelvin Makes the Star Award Shortlist!

We are delighted to announce that Glasgow Kelvin College has been shortlisted for another award!  This time for the SQA Star Awards in the Innovation category for the Kit Car programme, involving the Glasgow East Schools partnership.

Curriculum Manager, Jim Allan, nominated the programme for its innovative approach to providing hands-on automative engineering experience for the groups of school pupils who come to the College each week.  A testament to the hard work of Jim Allan and Josephine Smith, Curriculum Manager, the programme has been a runaway success with the students producing a sleek roadster.

The nomination is excellent recognition of the quality of teaching the College delivers and the productive relationships we are developing with our local schools.  It is a real compliment to be considered for one of the awards.  The ceremony will be held in November in Edinburgh and we’re keeping everything crossed for a great result on the night.

Scottish Parliament Reception

Staff and students from the College’s fashion department attended a reception at the Scottish Parliament this week to showcase the College’s India programme. The reception, organised by Colleges Scotland, invited colleges from across Scotland to present an example of their activity and Glasgow Kelvin was asked to showcase the India fashion partnership.

Two students who visited India, Kharis Shearer and Katie Chow, wore garments that were designed as part of the project and were accompanied by David Webster, Elaine Carswell, Sandra Thomson and Alastair McGhee.

The stand generated a lot of interest and visits from the Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, and MSP John Mason allowed Katie and Kharis to talk about their experiences and the impact the project has had on them.

Come Out and Show Your Support!

Stonewall UK’s new campaign, #ComeOutForLGBT, is building strength all over the UK and some of our own Senior Team showed their support earlier in the week.

The campaign sends a clear equalities message, encouraging everyone, everywhere to be themselves, safe in the knowledge of the support of others.  Make your own contribution and make an impact at the Stonewall site.

Kelvin Welcomes Cllr Jennifer Layden

One of Glasgow’s recently elected Councillors, Jennifer Layden, made time in her busy schedule to come in and find out more about the College in her own ward of Calton.  She is also City Convenor of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee and she too showed her support for the #ComeOutForLGBT campaign.

Alan Sherry introduced her to the College and discussed the high-quality learning and teaching which we deliver in the heart of Glasgow’s communities.  We look forward to a long and productive relationship with Cllr Layden.

Radiant and Brighter

After months of planning and student trips to Radiant and brighter premises, the fashion Department have completed the textile hanging which embraces diversity and culture. The big reveal will take place at their conference in Edinburgh on Friday the 28th of September (today).  Sandra Thomson and Elaine Carswell are attending with some of the second year students who helped with the project. Michael and Pheona are delighted with the end result.

Our students have gained valuable experience teaching skills to complete beginners and were able to discuss ideas with the Radiant and Brighter clients that represented a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

They are very pleased with the finished piece which is much better in the flesh as there is so much detail to the individual images. Each handprint represents the participants in the project with strong cultural references.

Watch our for an update on this event in next weeks update.
