We had a brief break from our Blogging schedule last week, but we are back to normal and have an interesting selection of news, visits and awards to update you on.

Brexit Minister visit to College
The College welcomed Mike Russell MSP, Minister for UK Negotiations on Scotland’s Place in Europe, to a meeting with Principals from Glasgow Clyde College, City of Glasgow College, South Lanarkshire College and New College Lanarkshire as well as James Boyce from the Scottish Government.
Discussions focused on the impact of Brexit on the College and skills sector in Scotland, what implications there are for our close partnerships with the EU and what the future holds.
The Resonate Music Industry event is a conference focusing on industry training, business development, innovation and collaboration, Resonate aims to inform, educate and provide ample opportunity for Scottish creatives to collaborate and network.
Eight of the Music Business Management students at GKC were invited to help out at the Conference held at The Barras Arts and Design Building (BAAD) on the 16th of November.
23rd Precinct/Notting Hill publishing who are facilitating the conference have already employed one ex student full time and have taken on three other GKC students as Interns.
This offers the music business students a great opportunity to network with Industry professionals, gain vital experience and build there CV for future employment opportunities.
GKC have also taken the chance to provide promotional Electric Honey goods such as hats and bottle openers for the “Resonate” goody bags to further promote the brand amongst industry professionals.

Glasgow Kelvin College welcomes Fujitsu to Training Suite Grand Opening
The College features the state-of-the-art Fujitsu technology in its fully equipped Air Conditioning and Refrigeration training workshop. Pop down and have a look!
The Personal Achievement Award Level 2 group have created an exhibition about extinct animals. This was in conjunction with their Eco-Awareness unit.
There are 9 collages using recyclable materials and they are displayed along the Music Department corridor on the Ground floor at the Springburn campus.

Fashion Student Award Winner
At the recent Incorporation of Tailors , Trades House of Glasgow ‘Choosing Dinner ‘, Fashion student Yvonne Hay received an award to recognise her achievement and also was presented with her membership of the Incorporation of Tailors, from the Deacon Convenor Mr T.J.Purdon.
In front of a packed Trades Hall, Yvonne received her certification and cheque for her design work and was in good company, receiving her award with other students representing Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
The ceremony is a very traditional event and continued student achievement strengthens the close working relationship GKC has with the Trades House for the benefit of students past , present and future. Below Yvonne is seen with ex Deacon Mr R. Prentice, who is responsible for organising the student awards on behalf of the tailors, Iain Abercrombie and past fashion student, Greg Russell Paton, who attended as Yvonne’s guest to savour the atmosphere and sample the hospitality of the Trades House.
2nd Year Actors Lead Shakespeare Workshops to Schools Groups
Jade McDonald and other members of the 2nd year Acting and Performance students did a great job in leading pupils from St Ninians high school through a 3 hour Shakespeare workshop.
The pupils then further enhanced there understanding of Shakespeare as they attended the 2nd Year Actors Production of King Lear. Great commitment and dedication from all involved.

Gold for John at BESA Conference 2017
Congratulations go to Glasgow Kelvin College fourth year Refrigeration Apprentice, John Thompson from Dundee, who has carried off the gold medal in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Apprentice of the Year category at BESA (Building Engineering Services Association) first ever national conference and award ceremony held in London.
This is a great leap forward for John who, in 2016, was the bronze medal winner of the Worldskills UK SkillFRIDGE Competition and has worked hard to improve his placing – with great success! This year, he also won the regional heat of BESA Scotland’s Training Awards and went forward to the national finals.
Fraser Wins UK Apprentice of the Year Award
24yr old Fraser from Inverness had earlier this year won the Scottish BESA (Building Engineering Services Association) overall Apprentice of the Year which was presented to him at the Scottish Parliament in May. He went forward from this to represent Scotland at the national competition where he once again excelled by, this time, winning the coveted UK award
Christmas Card Competition
Then take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to showcase your creative skills in our Christmas Card competition.
The winning design will be delivered by email to all of our stakeholders.
- Animated designs are welcome as well as multimedia designs
- The card itself should measure 15x15cm or 800 x 800 pixels
- You can work in any medium from photography, paint & pencil to digital designs or a mix of all. Be creative!
- Your design will need to be either a JPEG, Ai, PSD & TIFF file at 300dpi
Once you’re happy with your design, you will need to email a copy of your design in any of the above formats to: email@example.com

The competition is open to all students enrolled at Glasgow Kelvin College.
